Puppy Kindergarten

This class tends to fill up quickly. Please enroll and pay for the class on-line to reserve your space. https://seattle.goodcitizendog.com/classregistration

Spring and summer classes will be held at 3708 Commencement Bay Drive, Tacoma, WA 98407. This is a private home with a very large enclosed, grass covered space that is perfect for on leash instruction and off-leash play.

Anyone who wants their "new addition" to be an integral part of your family unit will sign up for this incredible group class. It is, without a doubt, the best puppy training class in all of Western Washington. It is a 6-week class designed to cover all the basics of puppy training and care. (Puppies are somewhere between 8 weeks and 6 months old). The initial focus of these classes is to provide intensive on and off-leash socializing opportunities and exercises for the puppies to encourage a sense of confidence and well-being, and to reduce fear and eliminate reactivity.

Unlike many other first level puppy classes, we focus a great deal of time on basic obedience training, with an emphasis on “no biting”, attention and focus exercises (ZEN), impulse control (leave it) and a variety of skills, including recall (come when called), no jumping and leash walking. We teach all the basic skills using voice and visual cues (hand signals). And, we are educating dog owners to understand how to communicate effectively in order to properly train their pups.

Our puppy training classes are also incredibly fun and way more interesting and educational than anywhere else! It's a MUST DO!

***Please note! We recommend at least the first set of vaccines, but this is a controlled environment and chance of exposure to Parvo or Distemper is extremely low. In 20 years of conducting this class we have not had one case reported. Socializing your pup, especially during a global pandemic, is essential to its overall well-being and emotional disposition.

Puppy II (Intermediate Level) Class

This class is designed for older puppies between 6 and 12 months. This is a 6-week class with plenty of on and off-leash interaction and supervised playtime with the other puppies as his is still an important time for socializing, to build “play skills” and to manage fear before it becomes a problem. We co-mingle puppies of all different breed types and sizes.

Puppy II class will focus on intensive basic obedience training to solidify the skills the pups learned in Puppy Kindergarten; sit, down, come, wait, walking on leash, and leave it, but with longer duration and more reliability. This is the class where we introduce and achieve a “stay” with more intensive impulse control work. We will address issues that become more prevalent at this age like jumping up on people and objects, counter-surfing (for the larger puppies) and becoming overly enthusiastic when meeting or greeting new dogs or people.

This is an important next step following the puppy kindergarten class. You don’t take your human kids out of school after Kindergarten. The same philosophy holds for your fur kids. Keep their education going and you will be glad that you did.

Advanced Meet & Greet (reactive dog class) First Class of 2024

This is a 6-week class and meets every week for 1-hour. as described on the Group Classes page.https://seattle.goodcitizendog.com/classregistration/advanced-meet-and-greet

The first class is “no dogs” and will be mandatory for all participants. If you cannot be there in person, we can try to get you on a zoom call. It is quite important to attend. all classes, but the first one is mandatory. During this session, we review the concepts and techniques used in class, discuss pertinent information about each dog and build trust among participants. In this first session, you will gain an understanding about how and why the class works. Classes 2 - 6 bring the dogs together at a variety of parks, schools and other public locations with progressive amounts of distraction and challenge.

Advanced Meet & Greet is Good CitiZEN Dog’s signature class. Our Tacoma reactive dog class is like no other training program in Western Washington . No other group does this class as effectively or so we’ve been told. Over the past 20 years we have graduated many hundreds of dogs and grateful dog owners from this amazing class who, after completion, found a new “leash on life”.

This class is primarily geared toward the development of impeccable attention and focus and to help dog owners gain more confidence and control of their dogs, primarily on leash. The class helps dogs that range from simply overexcited all the way to “fear-based” behaviors when encountering others on leash.

Whether you have an older rescue dog with an impoverished play or social history or a dog you’ve had since it was a puppy, this class will help you achieve expert handling skills. Using de-sensitizing and counter conditioning techniques, the dogs gain confidence in social settings while limiting and reversing patterns of unwanted behavior. It is a fabulous class and is taught by an expert who designed, developed and refined it over the last 18 years.

Make your walks and time spent with your dog more enjoyable to you and those around you. To register for this amazing class click on this link https://seattle.goodcitizendog.com/classregistration/advanced-meet-and-greet

Advanced Obedience (AKC Canine Good Citizen) LAST CLASS OF 2024!!!

Please Note: Due to Covid 19 and its variants, all participants who are not vaccinated are required to wear a mask.

Weather permitting the classes will be held at 3708 Commencement Bay Drive at a private home in a large enclosed backyard. If it is raining, please check your email the day of class.

This class is designed for puppies 8 month and older dogs with at least an intermediate level of training experience and skill. This challenging 6-week class focuses on basic obedience and will wrap up with the AKC CGC (Canine Good Citizen) certification test. There will still be plenty of on and off-leash socializing and supervised playtime, but we will spend much more time in this class working on building more reliable skills. This class is meant to “seal the deal” on your training and set you up for the lifelong relationship you want with your best furry friend.

We will pay a great deal of attention to helping the dogs “generalize” all of their skills and make sure you have success with the skills that are most important, with and without distractions. We will also do extensive and more advanced attention and focus exercises, develop a great “recall” from a distance, with distractions, and achieve awesome impulse control. This class will focus much more attention on basic obedience, and achieve a reliable “sit” and “down stay” with other dogs present. Distractions in class will make training at home much easier.

We will also spend time in public places working on “meeting and greeting” the public and walking politely (without pulling or jumping) while on leash and “sitting politely” for petting. This is a great class that you and your pup will enjoy immensely.
